My main goals for this site are to provide lessons, tips and tricks for growing food and practicing permaculture in arid environments, focused on deserts.
The info about growing food in a desert is scattered around the Internet, so I wanted to put the most useful stuff in one place.
If you are new to these techniques, then welcome! The most important thing that I’ve learned over the years is that growing veggies and fruit in the desert is possible. But, it takes some knowledge and efforts that make sense to make arid land growable.
You can do it if you learn a bit then test an action out. Keep an attitude of hope and positivity since people all over the world are doing it! Massive projects across Africa, India and China show that desert can be turned green.
In the US, desert permaculture and gardening is being practiced all over Arizona, Nevada and California. I feel it will continue to grow as more people turn their backs on expensive city living.
A combination of actions is common to all successful desert garden projects. We make earthworks for holding the rare rain. It makes sense to start native trees with deep roots so they provide shade and mulch.
Wind is also a major factor that dries things out. So, create some fencing out of debris and trees. Shade is also a vital starting point, so hearty pioneer trees make sense.
I will make specific lessons for each topic as time goes on, sharing the best videos I can find. The best thing to do is start small and cheap with the things that make the most sense to your desert property.
Draw out a loose plan for creating earthworks, fences and where gardens and trees will go. We all edit our plans as time goes along and we learn what is working for us.
More and more people are trying it since desert land is still affordable!
